How to sell a luxury watch
Whether you inherited a watch or want to change models: the way you sell decides how much you actually receive.
Before you sell a luxury watch
- Note the reference and serial number and gather box, papers, receipts and spare links.
- Get an idea of the value. Start with a free estimate.
- Don't polish the watch and don't swap the strap or bracelet.
- Take good photos of the dial, caseback, clasp and papers.
Where to sell
Watch dealers buy immediately and pay right away; they need a margin. Ask several dealers for a written offer. Auction houses reach many collectors and suit rare and valuable pieces; they charge commissions. Online platforms can get good prices for popular models, but photos, shipping, insurance and the risk of fraud are your responsibility. Some brands and their retailers also buy back watches or offer trade-ins.
Gold watches
For solid gold watches from less sought-after brands, the gold value can be the floor. Check whether the case is solid gold or only plated.
Avoid these mistakes
- Selling to the first buyer without knowing the value.
- Sending the watch before payment has cleared.
- Meeting buyers alone with an expensive watch; meet at a bank or a dealer instead.
- Polishing the watch to make it look "better".
