Vacheron Constantin: origins and founding
The company traces its start to 1755, when the 24-year-old Geneva watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron signed an apprenticeship contract for his workshop. That document is treated as the founding record. A pocket watch signed "J. M: Vacheron A GENEVE" is the only known watch that names the founder with his first name.
In the early years the workshop made pocket watches for wealthy clients. The brand later adopted the Maltese cross as its symbol in 1880.
Founders and family
Jean-Marc Vacheron handed the business to his son Abraham Vacheron in 1785. In 1810 his grandson Jacques-Barthélemy Vacheron took over and began exporting to France and Italy. In 1819 the businessman François Constantin became a partner, and the firm became Vacheron & Constantin. A letter by Constantin from that year contains the motto the brand still quotes: "Do better if possible, and that is always possible."
Charles Constantin was the last member of the founding families to lead the firm. Georges Ketterer took control in 1940, and his son Jacques Ketterer ran the company until his death in 1987.

Movements and technique
Vacheron Constantin is a full manufacture known for thin movements and complications. Examples include the ultra-thin Calibre 1003 of 1955, the Reference 4261 minute repeater of 1943 and the ultra-thin Calibre 1731 minute repeater. Many of its movements carry the Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève), a hallmark for finishing and origin in the canton of Geneva.
Vacheron Constantin today
Vacheron Constantin belongs to the Richemont group and has its headquarters and main manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates near Geneva, with a further production site in Le Brassus. It sits in the haute horlogerie segment, with entry prices well above most Swiss brands.
Vacheron Constantin prices on the pre-owned market
Vintage and modern Vacheron Constantin pieces have steady collector demand. The steel 222, the Overseas in steel and complicated pieces such as chronographs, perpetual calendars and minute repeaters attract the most interest. Simple vintage gold dress watches are more common and usually sell for much less than the sports models.
Value depends on the reference, the movement, the condition of the dial and case, and whether box, papers or an archive document are included. Original, unrestored dials and unpolished cases are preferred. Important historic pieces can reach very high results: at Antiquorum in Geneva on 3 April 2005, a 1929 pocket watch made for King Fuad I of Egypt sold for CHF 3,306,250.
How to recognise a genuine Vacheron Constantin
A genuine Vacheron Constantin is signed on the dial, case and movement, and the movement and case carry their own numbers that should match the records for that reference. Look at the quality of the movement finishing: it should be clean and precise, and Geneva Seal movements show the seal. Be careful with vintage watches that have redials, replacement cases or non-original movements and with copies of popular modern models such as the Overseas. Our guide shows how to spot a fake watch, and for valuable pieces you can ask Vacheron Constantin's own service to check the watch.
