The most valuable Swiss watches

A handful of Swiss watches have sold for millions at auction. They show what really drives value: rarity, complications, condition and a story that can be proven.

Record prices for Swiss watches

  • Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime ref. 6300A-010, a one-off in steel made for the Only Watch charity auction: CHF 31 million at Christie's in Geneva in November 2019.
  • Patek Philippe Henry Graves Supercomplication, a pocket watch delivered to its owner in 1933: CHF 23.2 million at Sotheby's in Geneva in November 2014.
  • Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6239 owned by the actor Paul Newman: 17.8 million US dollars at Phillips in New York in October 2017.

Watches like these are museum pieces. The watch in your drawer is very unlikely to be one, but they show which qualities matter.

Rarity and production numbers

Limited series, short production runs and unusual dial or bezel variants are scarce. Collectors pay most for references that were made in small numbers and survive in good condition.

Complications

Perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, tourbillons and split-seconds chronographs need many hours of hand work. Watches with grand complications from the great Geneva and Vallée de Joux houses are among the most expensive at auction.

Steel sports watches in demand

Some steel sports models have been sought after for years, for example the Rolex Submariner, GMT-Master II and Daytona, the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Their second-hand prices have often been close to or above retail, but they move with the market.

Condition and originality

For the same reference, an unpolished case, an original dial and original hands can multiply the price. Replaced service dials and heavy polishing reduce it.

Provenance

A watch with a documented famous owner or a well-recorded history can sell far above an identical piece without that story. The key word is documented: claims without proof add nothing.
