Blancpain: origins and founding

According to the brand, Jehan-Jacques Blancpain began making watches in 1735 in Villeret, a village in the Bernese Jura. Some historians question how firmly that date is documented, but it is the year the brand uses. For almost two centuries the business stayed in the Blancpain family and made watches and movements in Villeret.

Founders and family

Jehan-Jacques Blancpain is the founder named by the brand. His grandson Frédéric-Louis Blancpain modernized production around 1815, replacing the old verge (crown-wheel) escapement with the cylinder escapement. Family management ended in 1932. In 1933 Betty Fiechter and André Léal took over the business, which was renamed Rayville S.A., successor to Blancpain.

Blancpain history and milestones

  • 1735: Start of watchmaking in Villeret, according to the brand.
  • 1926: Together with John Harwood, Blancpain markets one of the first automatic wristwatches.
  • 1933: Betty Fiechter and André Léal buy the company (Rayville S.A.).
  • 1953: The Fifty Fathoms dive watch, developed with French Navy combat swimmers led by Captain Bob Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude Riffaud.
  • Late 1950s: Fifty Fathoms watches are used by US Navy combat divers; Blancpain becomes part of the SSIH group, with Omega.
  • 1970s–1980: The quartz crisis. SSIH uses Blancpain to make movements, and in 1980 the brand is folded into Omega.
  • 1983: Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet buy the Blancpain name and move production to Le Brassus in the Vallée de Joux. The brand focuses only on mechanical watches.
  • 1991: The 1735 Grande Complication, a limited edition of 30 pieces.
  • 1992: The Swatch Group (then SMH) buys Blancpain back.
  • 2010: The movement maker Frédéric Piguet is merged into Blancpain.

Famous Blancpain models

  • Fifty Fathoms – the dive watch with a rotating bezel, in vintage and modern versions; plus the smaller Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe.
  • Villeret – classic dress watches, including complete calendars with moon phase, a Blancpain signature.
  • Léman – sporty-classic watches, removed from the catalogue in 2019 but common on the pre-owned market.
  • Air Command – a pilot's chronograph with vintage roots.
  • Women collection and Métiers d'Art pieces with engraving and enamel.

Movements and technique

Since the 1983 relaunch Blancpain has made only mechanical watches. With Frédéric Piguet, long its sister company and merged into Blancpain in 2010, it has its own movement base for thin automatic movements, chronographs, minute repeaters and tourbillons. In 1987 the brand presented what it called the thinnest self-winding chronograph and the smallest minute-repeater movement of the time. Complete calendars with moon phase are a typical Blancpain complication.

Blancpain today

Blancpain belongs to the Swatch Group and is based in Le Brassus. It is one of the group's top-end (haute horlogerie) brands. The Fifty Fathoms is its best-known line, alongside classic Villeret watches and high complications.

Blancpain prices on the pre-owned market

Modern Blancpain watches usually sell below retail on the pre-owned market. The Fifty Fathoms and Bathyscaphe are the easiest to sell; dress watches and Léman models are often good value for buyers, which means lower prices for sellers. Vintage Fifty Fathoms from the 1950s and 1960s, especially military-issued pieces with original dials, are sought after by collectors and can be worth far more than modern pieces. Value depends on reference, original parts, condition and a full set with papers. Watches from the Rayville era and SSIH-era pieces vary widely and need a close look.

How to recognise a genuine Blancpain

Modern Blancpain watches carry the reference and an individual serial number on the caseback or case; these should match the warranty card. The movement, visible on many models through a sapphire caseback, should be finely finished and signed Blancpain. Vintage Fifty Fathoms are often faked or assembled from mixed parts ("frankens"), so check dial, bezel, case and movement for consistency. Our guide on how to spot a fake watch has more checks.
