TAG Heuer: origins and founding
The company was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer in Saint-Imier, in the Swiss Jura. In 1867 it moved to Biel/Bienne, a major watchmaking town. From early on Heuer focused on timing: chronographs, stopwatches and dashboard timers.
Founders and family
The Heuer family ran the company for more than a century. Charles-Auguste Heuer, Edouard's son, led the development of precise stopwatches. In the early 1960s Jack Heuer, Edouard's great-grandson, took over. He designed the Carrera and steered the brand toward motor racing. Jack Heuer is closely linked to the brand's most famous vintage models.
TAG Heuer history and milestones
- 1882: Heuer patents its first chronograph.
- 1887: patent for the oscillating pinion, a chronograph part still used today.
- 1911: "Time of Trip", a dashboard chronograph for cars and aircraft.
- 1916: the Mikrograph, a stopwatch accurate to 1/100 of a second.
- 1933: the Autavia dashboard timer.
- 1962: John Glenn carries a Heuer stopwatch on the Mercury Atlas 6 mission.
- 1963: the Carrera chronograph.
- 1969: Heuer, Breitling and Hamilton present one of the first automatic chronograph movements, Calibre 11 ("Chrono-Matic"). The Monaco is among the first watches to use it.
- 1971: Steve McQueen wears a Monaco in the film Le Mans.
- 1985: the TAG Group buys Heuer and the company becomes TAG Heuer. TAG stands for "Techniques d'Avant Garde".
- 1999: LVMH acquires the company.
- 2025: TAG Heuer returns as official timekeeper of Formula One.
Famous TAG Heuer models
- Carrera: the racing chronograph from 1963, still the core of the range.
- Monaco: the square automatic chronograph from 1969, known from Le Mans.
- Autavia: first a dashboard timer, later a wrist chronograph, revived in modern form.
- Aquaracer: the sports and dive watch line.
- Formula 1: sporty, often quartz models many owners bought as a first Swiss watch.
- Link: recognisable by its S-shaped bracelet links.
- Connected: TAG Heuer's smartwatch line.
Movements and technique
TAG Heuer uses both bought-in and in-house movements. Many models run on Swiss movements based on ETA or Sellita designs, sold under TAG Heuer calibre names. Around 2010 the brand introduced its own chronograph Calibre 1887, derived from a Seiko design, and later renamed it Heuer 01. The Heuer 02, announced in 2013 and built in volume from 2018, is a thinner in-house chronograph with about 80 hours of power reserve, made at TAG Heuer's site in Chevenez. Quartz models remain an important part of the range.
TAG Heuer today
TAG Heuer is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and belongs to the French luxury group LVMH. It sits in the upper-mid price segment of Swiss watches, between entry brands and high-end luxury. Its image is built on motor sport and chronographs.
TAG Heuer prices on the pre-owned market
There are two very different markets. Vintage Heuer chronographs from the 1960s and 1970s, signed "Heuer" without "TAG", are true collector pieces. Early Carrera, Autavia and Monaco references with original dials and unpolished cases are especially sought after. The record for a Heuer was set by Steve McQueen's own Monaco reference 1133 from Le Mans, sold by Phillips in December 2020 for $2,208,000. That is a unique piece with famous provenance, not a benchmark for ordinary watches.
Modern TAG Heuer watches usually sell below their retail price. Automatic Carreras and Monacos hold value better than quartz models. Quartz Formula 1 and older Professional models from the 1980s and 1990s are common and sell for modest amounts. Box, papers, service history and condition make a clear difference.
How to recognise a genuine TAG Heuer
Modern TAG Heuer watches have a reference code and an individual serial number engraved on the caseback. Compare the reference with the dial, case size and movement type. A quartz watch with a seconds hand that sweeps smoothly, or a "chronograph" whose subdials don't work, is a warning sign. For vintage Heuer, check that dial, hands, bezel and movement belong together, because swapped parts are common. Read our guide on how to spot a fake watch for general checks.

Where is the serial number on a TAG Heuer?
On modern TAG Heuer watches the reference code and serial number are engraved on the caseback. Check that the reference matches the model on the dial.
Is a vintage Heuer worth more than a modern TAG Heuer?
Often yes. Original 1960s and 1970s Heuer chronographs such as the Carrera, Autavia and Monaco are sought after by collectors, while most modern models sell below retail.
