History
Vacheron Constantin was founded in Geneva in 1755 by the independent watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron. The brand describes itself as the world's oldest watch manufacture, operating continuously since 1755. Its motto, "Faire mieux si possible, ce qui est toujours possible" (do better if possible, and that is always possible), comes from an 1819 letter by François Constantin. The Maltese cross became the company symbol in 1880.
The brand opened its first Geneva boutique in 1906. Today its headquarters and main manufacture are in Plan-les-Ouates, in the canton of Geneva, in a building by Bernard Tschumi that opened in 2004. The Maison on Quai de l'Île in the city has housed the brand's boutique and has been used to present its heritage. Since 1996 Vacheron Constantin has been part of the Richemont group.
What you can see
According to Switzerland Tourism, the heritage area on the first floor of the Quai de l'Île building brings together temporary themed exhibitions, historic machines, tools and workshop furniture, antique furniture and archives, presented in an educational way. Selected visitors can also watch films about the brand's Métiers d'Art, its decorative crafts. Past exhibitions include "The Chronograph through Time," shown until March 2015.
Exhibitions change, so the pieces on view depend on the time of your visit. Milestones from the brand's history include:
- Grand complications: the Reference 57260 of 2015 with 57 complications, which took three watchmakers eight years to build, and the Berkley Grand Complication of 2024 with 63 complications, including the first Chinese perpetual calendar.
- Historic pocket watches: such as No. 402833 from 1929, made for King Fuad I of Egypt.
- Other notable pieces: the Tour de l'Île of 2005 with 16 complications and 834 parts, and the Kallista of 1979, set with 118 emerald-cut diamonds.
- Collections: the Overseas, formally launched in 1996 with a precursor from 1977, and Les Cabinotiers for unique pieces.
These pieces illustrate the brand's history and are not necessarily on display at the Maison.
Why it matters for watch collectors
Few watch brands have a history as long and continuous as Vacheron Constantin, and the Quai de l'Île address is closely tied to it. The heritage area, with its historic tools and archives, shows the working side of Geneva watchmaking rather than only finished watches, which helps collectors put individual references into context.
