Royal Oak Concept Black Panther at a glance

The Royal Oak Concept "Black Panther" Flying Tourbillon (ref. 26620IO.OO.D077CA.01) was presented by Audemars Piguet in April 2021. It was the first watch of the brand's partnership with Marvel Entertainment. A small three-dimensional Black Panther stands above the flying tourbillon, as if guarding it.

The collaboration

Black Panther is the Marvel superhero and king of the fictional nation of Wakanda. For AP, the Marvel partnership was a way to reach a new audience with the Royal Oak Concept, its most avant-garde line. In 2023 the series continued with the Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon "Spider-Man", again limited to 250 pieces, with a hand-painted Spider-Man floating over the openworked calibre 2974.

Design and details

  • Case: 42 mm titanium with black ceramic bezel and crown, water resistant to 50 m.
  • Figure: Black Panther in white gold, hand-engraved and hand-painted, set in a heroic pose above the tourbillon.
  • Movement: hand-wound calibre 2965 with flying tourbillon, hours and minutes.
  • Colors: purple accents that recall vibranium from the films, on a purple rubber strap with deployant buckle.

Edition size and release

The retail version is limited to 250 pieces. A unique piece with a white gold case was sold in a live charity auction on April 10, 2021, with proceeds for the non-profits First Book and Ashoka. The 2023 Spider-Man launch followed the same pattern: 250 titanium pieces, plus a unique white gold "Black Suit Spider-Man" auctioned in Dubai for the same charities.

Royal Oak Concept Black Panther on the secondary market

The Black Panther is a rare, very expensive tourbillon, and it changes hands mostly through specialist dealers and auctions. Buyers want the complete set: AP warranty card, box, the original purple strap and buckle, and any service records. Damage to the painted figure is hard to repair, so its condition is checked closely. The charity unique pieces are not comparable with the 250-piece edition.

How to check a Royal Oak Concept Black Panther

  • The reference 26620IO.OO.D077CA.01 and the serial numbers must match the AP warranty card.
  • A genuine piece has a real flying tourbillon at six o'clock. Many fakes use cheap fake tourbillons or open balances.
  • Look at the figure under magnification: the hand painting and engraving should be crisp, not a flat print or plastic part.
  • Audemars Piguet can confirm a watch's origin through its service network.
