H. Moser & Cie. Swiss Mad Watch
In 2017 H. Moser & Cie. made a watch with a case containing Swiss cheese. It was a protest against loose "Swiss Made" rules, and it came with a 50-piece sister model you can actually find.

H. Moser Swiss Mad Watch at a glance
H. Moser & Cie. presented the Swiss Mad Watch at the SIHH fair in Geneva in January 2017. It is a unique piece with a case made of a carbon-resin composite mixed with Vacherin Mont d'Or cheese. Alongside it came the Swiss Mad Venturer, a regular limited edition without cheese.
The collaboration
There is no outside artist here. The idea was a statement by Moser itself. The rules for the "Swiss Made" label had just been tightened from 50% to 60% Swiss value. Moser, whose watches it said were at least 95% Swiss by value, thought that was still too loose. It decided to drop "Swiss Made" from its dials and made the "most Swiss watch ever" to make the point.
Design and details
- Swiss Mad Watch (ref. 8327-1400): cheese-composite case, red fumé dial with white hands and markers, a nod to the Swiss flag. Furry Swiss cowhide strap. Hand-wound in-house caliber HMC 327 with a Straumann hairspring. List price CHF 1,081,291.
- Swiss Mad Venturer (ref. 8327-0208): 39 mm white gold case, red fumé dial, furry calfskin strap, same movement.
Edition size and release
The Swiss Mad Watch is a unique piece. The Swiss Mad Venturer was limited to 50 pieces at CHF 19,500. The cheese watch was offered at Christie's in Geneva on May 15, 2017, as lot 116, together with a Swiss Alp Watch prototype (ref. 5324-0200). The hammer fell at CHF 100,000, and the proceeds went to the Foundation for Swiss Watchmaking Culture, which supports apprenticeships and endangered crafts.
Swiss Mad Watch on the secondary market
The unique cheese watch is in a private collection. If you own a Swiss Mad model, it is almost certainly the Venturer. Buyers look for the warranty card showing reference 8327-0208, the original box and the furry strap, which is easily damaged. A fumé dial without marks and a crisp white gold case matter.
How to check a Swiss Mad Venturer
- Reference 8327-0208 and the serial on the papers must match the case.
- The dial is red fumé: lighter in the center, darker at the edge. A flat red dial is not right.
- Look through the case back for the hand-wound HMC 327.
- The dial does not say "Swiss Made". That is correct for Moser at this time, not a sign of a fake.
