Louis Erard × Alain Silberstein at a glance
Louis Erard, founded in 1931 in Neuchâtel, gave the design of its Excellence Régulateur to Alain Silberstein in 2019. The watch, called Le Régulateur Louis Erard × Alain Silberstein, was released in 2020 in two versions. It was the first in a series of collaborations; later Louis Erard × Silberstein models followed.
The artist
Alain Silberstein is an architect and interior designer. He founded his own watch brand in 1988 and made colorful, geometric watches under his name until 2012. His style draws on the Bauhaus, Suprematism and De Stijl: basic shapes, primary colors and a sense of play. Collectors recognize his hands at a glance.
Design and details
- 40 mm case, 8 mm thick, 50 m water resistance.
- Regulator layout: a red triangle shows the hours on a subdial at 12, a large yellow arrow shows the minutes, and a wavy seconds hand runs at 6. A power reserve indicator sits at 9.
- Two versions: stainless steel with a white dial (yellow seconds hand) and black PVD-coated steel with a black dial (blue seconds hand).
- Hand-wound Peseux 7001 movement with Louis Erard's RE9 regulator module, about 42 hours of power reserve.
Edition size and release
Each version was limited to 178 pieces. At launch the steel version cost CHF 2,800 and the black PVD version CHF 2,900. Each watch came with a limited edition certificate.
Louis Erard × Alain Silberstein on the secondary market
This edition has done well with collectors. One documented result: a black PVD example, ref. 54230NS62.BVA09, with box and papers, sold for HK$44,100 at Phillips' Hong Kong Watch Auction XIII in November 2021, above its high estimate. Buyers look for the limited edition certificate, warranty card, box and original strap. On the black version, worn-through PVD coating on the edges lowers the appeal.
How to check a Louis Erard Silberstein
- Case, dial, movement and buckle should all be signed.
- The edition number on the case should match the certificate.
- Check the hand colors: they must match the version (yellow seconds on white, blue seconds on black). Swapped hands point to a parts watch.
- The movement is hand-wound. If the watch winds itself, something is wrong.
