Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award at a glance
The Silver Snoopy Award is NASA's own prize for people and teams who contribute to flight safety and mission success. Omega received it in 1970 after Apollo 13. Two modern Speedmasters celebrate that award: the Apollo 13 45th Anniversary from 2015 and the 50th Anniversary model from 2020. Earlier Snoopy-themed Speedmasters also exist.
The collaboration
Snoopy, the beagle from Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts comic, is NASA's safety mascot. On Apollo 13, after an explosion forced the crew to shut down the spacecraft's electronics, the astronauts used their Speedmasters to time a 14-second engine burn that put them on course for a safe return. The Snoopy models tell this rescue story on the dial and caseback.
Design and details
2015, ref. 311.32.42.30.04.003: 42 mm steel case, black ceramic bezel with luminous tachymeter scale, white dial with Snoopy in the small seconds at nine o'clock. A small comic strip between 0 and 14 seconds asks "What could you do in 14 seconds?". The caseback holds a sterling silver Snoopy medallion on dark blue enamel and is engraved "Silver Snoopy Award", "Eyes on the stars", "45th Anniversary", "Apollo XIII" and the individual number out of 1970. It runs on the hand-wound calibre 1861 and came on a black nylon strap.
2020, ref. 310.32.42.50.02.001: 42 mm steel case, blue ceramic bezel with white enamel scale, silver dial with a stamped silver Snoopy in the nine o'clock sub-dial and a blue nylon strap. It uses the Master Chronometer calibre 3861. On the back, the Earth turns once a minute with the running seconds, while Snoopy in the command module circles once a minute when the chronograph is running.
Edition size and release
The 2015 model, shown at Baselworld 2015, is limited to 1,970 numbered pieces, a nod to the year of the award. It came with a certificate, a silver Snoopy pin and a special newspaper in the box. The 2020 model, launched in October 2020, is not a limited edition and was sold through Omega boutiques and retailers.
Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award on the secondary market
Snoopy Speedmasters have a loyal following among Omega collectors. For the 2015 edition, collectors want the full box with certificate, pin and newspaper, plus the original strap. A matching number on caseback and card matters. For the 2020 model, a complete set with warranty card and unpolished case is preferred. Light wear on the bezel or caseback lowers interest.
How to check a Silver Snoopy Speedmaster
- Match the reference on the warranty card with the watch: 311.32.42.30.04.003 for 2015, 310.32.42.50.02.001 for 2020.
- On the 2015 model, the caseback number (xxxx/1970) should match the paperwork.
- On the 2020 model, test the caseback: the Earth disc must move with the seconds and Snoopy must move only while the chronograph runs. Fakes often get this wrong.
- Beware of standard Moonwatches with fitted Snoopy dials or aftermarket casebacks.
Read our guide on how to spot a fake watch, and ask Omega to check the serial number if in doubt.
