Valerio Adami Swatch at a glance

Deux Amoureux ("two lovers") is a 1988 Swatch by Valerio Adami, reference GZ111. It belongs to the Fondation Maeght series. Swatch says that the Belgian artists Pol Bury and Pierre Alechinsky joined forces with Adami for a set of three abstract watches.

The artist

Valerio Adami, born in Italy in 1935, is a painter known for strong black outlines and flat areas of bright color, close to comics and posters. The Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a major private art foundation in France, gave the series its name.

Design and details

  • Case in micro-injected ABS plastic, about 3.5 cm in diameter, as listed by the Centre Pompidou.
  • Flexible PVC strap; total length about 23 cm.
  • Quartz movement, made by Swatch in Biel, Switzerland.
  • Adami's line drawing of two lovers in his typical outlined style.

Edition size and release

The Centre Pompidou records its piece as copy no. 131 of 5,000. Swatch donated it to the museum in 1992, and it is inventoried as AM 1993-1-455. That makes it one of the few Swatch Art Specials with a museum record you can check online.

Valerio Adami Swatch on the secondary market

Collectors look for unworn watches in their original packaging, with the strap intact. The PVC strap can harden or crack with age, so a soft, clean strap is a good sign. The full Fondation Maeght trio (Adami, Bury, Alechinsky) is more interesting to many buyers than a single watch. Because the piece is numbered, the number should be legible and match any paperwork.

How to check a Valerio Adami Swatch

Check the reference GZ111 and the number out of 5,000. Compare the drawing with the museum photo of the Centre Pompidou piece. Look for a matching original strap and packaging, and for signs of a leaking battery. More tips are in our guide on how to spot a fake watch.
