Adriatica: origins and founding

According to the brand, Adriatica watches were first made in 1931, when a company called The Swiss Watch Company created the name and started production in Switzerland. Wikipedia also connects the brand's roots to the Montilier Watch Co., founded in 1852 in Montilier near Murten, but the brand's own history page starts in 1931. No individual founder is named in the sources.

Adriatica history and milestones

  • 1931: the brand is created and manufacturing begins.
  • World War II: according to Wikipedia, the brand was dormant from the start of the war until 1949.
  • 1962: production moves to Biel/Bienne and Basel, with a focus on classic gold-plated watches for men and women. The men's "World Champion" collection appears in this period.
  • 1989: a family takes over the brand (per Wikipedia).
  • 1998/1999: watches are made in the company's own facility in Dongio, Ticino.
  • 2006: Adriatica joins the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH).
  • 2010: the headquarters moves to Ticino; today the company, Adriatica PR&A Watch Sagl, is registered in Minusio.

Famous Adriatica models

Adriatica is not a brand of single famous references. Most watches you will find are round, classic dress watches, often gold-plated or rose-gold-plated, plus chronographs and sporty models in steel, titanium or PVD-coated cases. The World Champion men's line from the 1960s is the best-known historical name.

Movements and technique

Adriatica does not make its own calibres. The brand states that its mechanical and automatic models use movements from ETA, Sellita, Soprod, Landeron and Ronda, while most quartz watches use Ronda or ETA movements. The caliber is often visible through a display caseback on automatic models.

Adriatica today

Adriatica is an independent, Ticino-based brand in the entry-level Swiss Made segment. It sells internationally, with the UK, Germany, the USA and several other markets named by the company.

Adriatica prices on the pre-owned market

Adriatica watches are bought new at accessible prices, and used pieces usually sell for a fraction of the original price. Quartz and gold-plated models with worn plating are the hardest to sell. Automatic and chronograph models in good condition, complete with box and papers, find buyers more easily. Vintage pieces in solid gold (check the hallmarks) can be worth more because of the metal content alone.

How to recognise a genuine Adriatica

Adriatica is rarely faked because of its price level. Check that the dial and caseback carry the Adriatica name and "Swiss Made", that the caseback shows a model or reference number, and that the movement matches the type stated (quartz or automatic). Plating wear, replaced crowns or non-original straps are more common issues than fakes. See our guide on how to spot a fake watch.
