Where the Alpiner comes from

Alpina was founded in 1883 by Gottlieb Hauser in Winterthur. According to the brand, Hauser created the Alpiner 4 in 1938, a sports watch that had to meet four criteria: it was shockproof, antimagnetic, waterproof and made of stainless steel. Alpina says alpinists, air force pilots, divers and the military relied on such watches where reliability mattered. The "4" in the name refers to these four properties, and today's Alpiner collection builds on this heritage.

The Alpiner today

The modern Alpiner collection is made up of several lines. The Alpiner 4 Automatic is a steel sports watch of 44 mm diameter and 13.15 mm height, with the automatic calibre AL-525 (26 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, 38 hours of power reserve) and 100 m water resistance. In 2023 the brand showed the Alpiner Extreme at Watches & Wonders Geneva, a return of the Extreme design with an integrated steel bracelet. The Alpiner Extreme Automatic is a cushion-shaped steel watch of 39 x 40.5 mm and 11.5 mm thickness, with the same AL-525 calibre, a sapphire crystal and 200 m water resistance. Alpina has also shown Extreme variants with a skeleton dial, a chronograph and a regulator display.

AlpinerX: the smartwatch

In 2020 Alpina introduced the AlpinerX Alive, a smartwatch in a 45 mm case, available in steel and in navy blue fiberglass. It combines an analog dial with an AMOLED touch screen and offers heart rate monitoring, GPS, a chronograph, sleep and activity tracking and a rechargeable battery rated by the brand at up to seven days. Alpina also published tutorial videos for setting up and using the AlpinerX Alive. A smartwatch of this kind depends on its battery and software, so its value behaves very differently from that of a mechanical Alpiner.

What is an Alpina Alpiner worth?

Current Alpiner models are sold in the accessible price segment, so pre-owned prices depend mainly on the line, the condition, the strap or bracelet, and whether box, papers and service records are present. Limited editions such as the AlpinerX Alive by Markus Eder (2021) can be of interest to collectors, but we know of no documented auction results for the Alpiner that we could cite here, so we do not name any figures. For an AlpinerX, check that it still charges and that the screen and sensors work. Mechanical models are easier to judge: look at the dial, the case sides and the rate of the movement.
