Andersen Genève: origins and founding

Svend Andersen opened his own workshop in 1980 in the center of Geneva, on the banks of the Rhône. He had launched his first own pieces in the late 1970s and delivered his first unique piece in 1980. The workshop is still on the Quai du Seujet in Geneva.

Founders and family

Svend Andersen was born in 1942 in Denmark, trained as a watchmaker there and moved to Switzerland in 1963. He worked in after-sales at Gübelin in Lucerne and Geneva and then spent almost ten years in Patek Philippe's workshop for grand complications. In 1985 he co-founded the AHCI (Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants) with Vincent Calabrese, the association of independent watchmakers that later helped many young makers. In 2015 Andersen sold the company; Pierre-Alexandre Aeschlimann has been president of Andersen Genève SA since then, while Andersen continued to work in the workshop.

Andersen Genève history and milestones

  • 1980: the workshop opens in Geneva.
  • 1985: Svend Andersen co-founds the AHCI.
  • 1989: a world time watch, one of the brand's best-known complications.
  • 1995: a unique jumping-hour watch with day and night display for a collector, the start of the Jour et Nuit concept. Cartier later used this idea for its Pasha Jour et Nuit (1998), with Andersen adapting the movement.
  • 2000: the Grand Jour et Nuit, limited to 20 pieces.
  • 2015: sale of the company and new management.
  • 2020/2021: the Jumping Hours 40th Anniversary marks 40 years of the workshop.

Famous Andersen Genève models

  • Worldtimers: world time watches, often with hand-guilloché or stone dials.
  • Jumping Hours / Jour et Nuit: watches that show the hour in a window that jumps.
  • Calendars: annual, perpetual and a secular perpetual calendar.
  • Automaton watches: including erotic automatons, a classic specialty of the atelier.
  • Unique pieces: more than 100 pièces uniques made to order.

Movements and technique

Andersen Genève works mostly with high-grade base movements that it modifies heavily. Examples are modified Frédéric Piguet calibres in the Jour et Nuit and Jumping Hours models. The brand is also known for unusual dial materials, such as "blue gold", grand feu enamel, hand guilloché and stones like jade or aventurine. Cases have come from makers such as Jean-Pierre Hagmann. Over 40 years the workshop made about 1,500 watches.

Andersen Genève today

Andersen Genève is an independent haute horlogerie atelier in Geneva. It makes small series, limited editions and custom pieces at prices in the luxury and haute horlogerie segment.

Andersen Genève prices on the pre-owned market

Andersen Genève watches rarely appear on the market because so few were made. Worldtimers, jumping-hour models and unique pieces attract collectors of independent watchmaking. Value depends on the complication, the case metal, the dial material, whether it is a unique piece or a limited edition, and on original papers from the workshop. Pieces linked to Svend Andersen's own hand and early AHCI years can be of particular interest.

How to recognise a genuine Andersen Genève

Fakes are rare, but provenance is essential at this level. Ask for the original certificate and invoice, compare dial and case details with documented examples of the same edition, and check that the movement matches the model. The workshop in Geneva can help confirm a piece. More tips: how to spot a fake watch.
