Andreas Strehler: origins and founding

Andreas Strehler started working on his own on January 1, 1995. At first he repaired and restored antique watches and clocks. His first own creation, a table clock with a perpetual calendar called Tischkalender, was shown at Baselworld in 1998.

Founders and family

Andreas Strehler was born in 1971 in Winterthur. He trained as a watchmaker in Frauenfeld, attended the watchmaking school in Solothurn and finished his diploma in 1991. He then worked at Renaud & Papi in Le Locle (today part of Audemars Piguet), where he led prototyping until the end of 1994. He became a member of the AHCI, the academy of independent watchmakers, in 2000.

Andreas Strehler history and milestones

  • 1995: independent workshop, restoration work.
  • 1999: Zwei, a pocket watch with a switchable date/month display and his first patent; a wristwatch version followed in 2001.
  • 2002–2003: movement development for Chronoswiss (Chronoscope).
  • 2003–2011: movement development for H. Moser & Cie., including perpetual calendar and moon calibres.
  • 2005: founding of UhrTeil AG, his engineering and manufacturing company.
  • 2006: development of Maurice Lacroix's first manufacture chronograph movement.
  • 2007: movement for the Harry Winston Opus 7; move to Sirnach.
  • 2013: Sauterelle with a constant-force mechanism; Prix Gaïa from the International Museum of Horology.
  • 2014: Guinness World Record for the most precise moon phase in a wristwatch (Sauterelle à Lune Perpétuelle).
  • 2018: Trans Axial Tourbillon.

Famous Andreas Strehler models

  • Papillon (2008) and Papillon d'Or (2015): open-worked watches with a butterfly-shaped bridge.
  • Sauterelle (2013): with a patented remontoir d'égalité (constant force).
  • Sauterelle à Lune Perpétuelle (2014): moon phase that deviates one day in about 2 million years.
  • Cocon (2012), Lune Exacte (2016), Sauterelle à Heure Mondiale (2017).

Movements and technique

Strehler designs and makes his own movements in Sirnach through UhrTeil AG. The company also engineers complications and complete movements for other brands. His work focuses on clever mechanical solutions: switching displays, constant-force devices and very precise moon phases. He holds several patents, among them one for a compensating carbon balance (2000).

Andreas Strehler today

Andreas Strehler is independent and based in Sirnach in the canton of Thurgau. His watches belong to independent haute horlogerie and are made in very small series.

Andreas Strehler prices on the pre-owned market

Strehler watches appear rarely on the secondary market, mostly at specialist dealers or major auction houses. Collectors of independent watchmaking value the Sauterelle and Papillon models, low edition numbers and complete papers. Value depends on the model, the case metal, the complication and the condition. Watches made by UhrTeil for other brands are valued as watches of those brands.

How to recognise a genuine Andreas Strehler

Fakes are not known to be common, but provenance is key. A genuine piece should come with papers from the maker, and the movement architecture (for example the butterfly bridge on the Papillon) is distinctive and hard to copy. When in doubt, contact the workshop. Also see how to spot a fake watch.
