Baume & Mercier: origins and founding

The roots go back to 1830, when the brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume started a watch business, Frères Baume, in Les Bois, a village in the Swiss Jura. They made and sold pocket watches; a London branch, Baume Brothers, later helped sell them across the British Empire. The name Baume & Mercier dates from 1918, when William Baume and Paul Mercier founded a new company in Geneva that focused on wristwatches, including many non-round "shaped" designs.

Founders and family

Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume founded the original family firm. William Baume, a grandson of Louis-Victor, brought the family's experience to Geneva. His partner Paul Mercier was a jeweler. Together they gave the brand its two-name identity, which it has kept for over a century.

Baume & Mercier history and milestones

  • 1830: Frères Baume founded in Les Bois.
  • 1918: Baume & Mercier founded in Geneva.
  • 1919: The firm receives the Geneva Seal.
  • 1940s: Launch of a two-register chronograph.
  • Mid-1960s: Piaget takes over Baume & Mercier and brings in thin movements. The Greek letter Phi (Φ) becomes the brand's logo.
  • 1973: Launch of the Riviera, a steel sports watch with a twelve-sided bezel.
  • 1988: With Piaget, Baume & Mercier comes under Cartier's control and becomes part of what is today the Richemont group.
  • 2018: Launch of the Baumatic automatic movement in the Clifton collection.
  • 2026: Richemont announces in January the sale of Baume & Mercier to the Italian, family-owned Damiani Group; the deal is reported completed by July.

Famous Baume & Mercier models

  • Riviera – the twelve-sided sports watch from 1973, relaunched in recent years.
  • Clifton – round classic watches, including Baumatic and chronograph versions.
  • Classima – simple dress watches, very common on the pre-owned market.
  • Hampton – rectangular watches inspired by the brand's shaped designs.
  • Capeland – chronographs with vintage styling.
  • Linea and Promesse – ladies' collections.
  • Vintage gold dress watches and chronographs from the 1940s to 1970s.

Movements and technique

For most of its modern history, Baume & Mercier used movements from outside suppliers, both quartz and automatic. Under Piaget, thin movements came into the range. In 2018 the brand presented the Baumatic BM12-1975A, an automatic movement with a five-day (120-hour) power reserve and resistance to everyday magnetic fields, made with ValFleurier, the Richemont group's movement maker. Some Baumatic versions are COSC-certified chronometers.

Baume & Mercier today

Baume & Mercier is based in Geneva and since 2026 belongs to the Damiani Group of Italy. It is positioned in accessible luxury, the entry to mid-range of Swiss luxury watches, with classic designs rather than complicated haute horlogerie.

Baume & Mercier prices on the pre-owned market

Modern Baume & Mercier watches usually resell well below their original retail price. Quartz Classima and Linea models are very common and sell for modest sums. Automatic Clifton and Riviera models and chronographs do better, especially with box and papers. Vintage pieces in solid gold, two-register chronographs from the 1940s and 1950s, and early Riviera models attract collectors; with gold watches, the metal value sets a floor. Condition, original dial and service history drive value.

How to recognise a genuine Baume & Mercier

Look for the Phi logo and clean printing on the dial. The caseback is engraved with the reference and an individual serial number; these should match the warranty card. Check that a watch described as automatic really has an automatic movement and not quartz. On vintage chronographs, replaced dials and movements are the main risk. Frequently asked questions

Is Baume & Mercier a good watch brand?

Yes. Baume & Mercier is a Swiss brand with roots in 1830 that makes well-finished classic watches in the entry to mid-range luxury segment.

Who owns Baume & Mercier?

Since 2026 the Italian Damiani Group. Before that it belonged to Richemont from 1988.

Why do Baume & Mercier watches lose value?

Most models, especially quartz ones, were produced in large numbers and are widely available, so pre-owned prices are usually well below retail. Vintage gold pieces and chronographs hold up better.
