Berneron: origins and founding

Berneron is a small independent brand based in Neuchâtel. It spent about two years developing its first watch, the Mirage, which was launched in spring 2024. The brand calls its approach "Derestricted Horology": unusual shapes, but built on classical watchmaking.

Founders and family

Sylvain Berneron is a designer by training, not a watchmaker. He started in industrial design in the car and motorcycle world (BMW, Porsche, Ducati) and later became Chief Product Officer at Breitling, where he joined the board. He founded Berneron in parallel and financed it himself; the brand says it is fully owned by its founder, without outside investors.

Berneron history and milestones

• 2024: Launch of the Mirage, the first Berneron watch.
• Geneva Watch Days: First prototypes of the Quantième Annuel shown.
• Plans: One new product a year and further collections, including a sport-oriented line.

Famous Berneron models

• Mirage – a hand-wound dress watch with an asymmetric case and movement, made in gold. The Mirage 38 uses the brand's Calibre 233. Versions include Prussian Blue and Sienna.
• Quantième Annuel – an annual calendar, shown as prototypes after the Mirage.

Movements and technique

The Calibre 233 was designed for the Mirage's unusual shape. Berneron develops its technical plans itself and sources components from Swiss suppliers within about 50 km of Neuchâtel; assembly and service are done in-house. The brand uses gold for some movement parts and does not make brass movements.

Berneron today

Berneron sells directly to collectors and plans one new product a year. It sits in the independent, high-end segment, with all-gold watches and very limited production; orders are reported to be booked years ahead.

Berneron prices on the pre-owned market

So few Berneron watches exist that there is hardly a pre-owned market yet. When one appears, demand from collectors of independent watchmaking, the gold case, the version and a complete set with the brand's papers will decide the price.
