Carl F. Bucherer: origins and founding

Carl Friedrich Bucherer opened a watch and jewellery shop in Lucerne in 1888. The shop grew into Bucherer, one of the best-known watch and jewellery retailers in Switzerland. The family soon started selling watches under its own name: a first collection of ladies' watches in Art Deco style appeared in 1919.

Founders and family

The company stayed in the Bucherer family for well over a century. Jörg G. Bucherer, the third generation, took charge in 1976 and later became chairman. In 2023 the Bucherer group was sold to Rolex.

Carl F. Bucherer history and milestones

  • 1888: the shop opens in Lucerne.
  • 1919: first watch collection under the family name.
  • 1969: the company joins the Swiss group developing the Beta 21 quartz movement.
  • 2001: the watch brand is repositioned as Carl F. Bucherer and launches the Patravi line.
  • 2007: it buys the movement maker Techniques Horlogères Appliquées in Sainte-Croix, renamed Carl F. Bucherer Technologies.
  • 2008: launch of the in-house CFB A1000 automatic movement.
  • August 2023: Rolex buys Bucherer AG, including the watch brand.
  • February 2025: the Swiss business paper Bilanz reports that Rolex will discontinue Carl F. Bucherer because it was not profitable. The Bucherer retail chain is not affected.

Famous Carl F. Bucherer models

  • Manero: classic dress watches and chronographs, including more complicated models.
  • Patravi: larger sporty watches launched in 2001, including chronographs and the ScubaTec divers.
  • Heritage: vintage-inspired designs.
  • Adamavi, Pathos and Alacria: mostly dress and ladies' lines.
  • Older Bucherer-signed watches: many pieces from the 20th century were sold through the family's stores.

Movements and technique

Many Carl F. Bucherer models used bought-in Swiss movements. The brand's own CFB A1000, launched in 2008, is an automatic calibre with a peripheral rotor: the winding weight runs around the edge of the movement rather than over it, so you can see more of the movement through the caseback.

Carl F. Bucherer today

Carl F. Bucherer was headquartered in Lucerne and sat in the upper mid-range, below the big luxury houses. Since 2023 it has belonged to Rolex through Bucherer AG. According to reports from February 2025, Rolex is ending the brand; Rolex had not issued an official statement at the time those reports came out.

Carl F. Bucherer prices on the pre-owned market

Carl F. Bucherer watches usually sell well below their original retail price. The brand never had a large collector following, and the planned closure adds uncertainty about future demand and servicing. Models with the in-house A1000 movement, complications and limited editions generally attract more interest than simple quartz or standard automatic pieces. Box, papers and a recent service help a lot.

How to recognise a genuine Carl F. Bucherer

Carl F. Bucherer is not one of the most faked brands, but check that the dial printing is crisp, that the caseback engravings match the model, and that the serial number matches the papers. On A1000 models, the peripheral rotor should be visible through the caseback. Older watches signed only "Bucherer" are often retailer-branded pieces with standard Swiss movements. General tips: how to spot a fake watch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Carl F. Bucherer owned by Rolex?

Yes. Rolex bought Bucherer AG, including the Carl F. Bucherer watch brand, in August 2023. In February 2025 Swiss media reported that Rolex is discontinuing the watch brand.

Is Carl F. Bucherer the same as the Bucherer jewellery store?

Both come from the same Lucerne family business. Bucherer is the retail chain; Carl F. Bucherer was its own watch brand. The reported closure concerns only the watch brand.

Do Carl F. Bucherer watches hold their value?

Usually not very well: most sell well below their original retail price. Models with the in-house A1000 movement or complications tend to attract more buyers.
