Claude Bernard: origins and founding

Claude Bernard was founded in 1973 in the Swiss Jura. The brand has its atelier in Les Genevez, a small village in the Franches-Montagnes, where its watches are hand-assembled. From the start the idea was simple: Swiss Made watches at accessible prices.

Claude Bernard history and milestones

Claude Bernard is a young brand compared with the old Jura houses, and it does not claim a long list of historic firsts. Its story is tied closely to Edox, which is based in the same village. The two brands share management: aBlogtoWatch described Claude Bernard as more or less a sister company of Edox, and in 2025 the brand's marketing and sales director also held the same role for Edox.

The brand is sold through distributors in many countries. In 2019, for example, West End Collection took over distribution in Australia, and in 2025 the brand launched in the Philippines.

Famous Claude Bernard models

Claude Bernard works with collections rather than single famous references. The ones you are most likely to own are:

  • Classic – simple dress watches with Roman numerals or baton indexes.
  • Slim Line – thin, minimalist watches.
  • Aquarider – sporty divers with rotating bezel, rated to 200 meters.
  • Proud Heritage – vintage pilot style with oversized crowns.
  • Dress Code – watches designed for women.
  • Sophisticated Classics, Ora Vera and NEO 1973 – further dress and heritage lines.

Movements and technique

Claude Bernard uses bought-in Swiss movements, both quartz and mechanical. The Sophisticated Classics 83014 reviewed by aBlogtoWatch, for example, runs on a Sellita SW240-1 automatic. The range includes automatics, chronographs, moon phases, open-heart and skeleton dials. All watches carry "Swiss Made" on the dial; aBlogtoWatch noted that some external parts such as cases and bracelets are likely sourced from Asia, which is legal under Swiss Made rules.

Claude Bernard today

Today Claude Bernard is an entry-level Swiss brand. aBlogtoWatch placed it in the 150 to 800 dollar segment, and its Australian distributor called it a high-quality entry-level Swiss brand. Watches are still assembled in Les Genevez.

Claude Bernard prices on the pre-owned market

Claude Bernard watches are bought to be worn, not as investments. On the pre-owned market they usually sell well below their original retail price, as most fashion and entry-level brands do. Quartz models fetch the least. Automatic, chronograph and skeleton models in good condition, with box, papers and original bracelet, are the easiest to sell. Scratches, a non-working movement or a replaced strap lower the value quickly.

How to recognise a genuine Claude Bernard

Claude Bernard is not a common target for counterfeiters, but checks still help. Look for clean "Swiss Made" printing on the dial, a sapphire crystal, and a stainless steel caseback with the brand name and a model reference engraved. The reference on the back should match the model on the papers. For mechanical models, a look at the movement through a display back or by a watchmaker confirms a Swiss calibre.
