F.P. Journe: origins and founding

F.P. Journe, legally Montres Journe SA, was founded in Geneva in 1999 by François-Paul Journe. From the start the company followed the motto "Invenit et Fecit", meaning it both invents and makes its movements. Its first watch was the Tourbillon à Remontoir d'Égalité of 1999, which combined a tourbillon with a constant-force mechanism in a wristwatch.

To finance the start, Journe used a subscription model: collectors paid in advance for the first watches. These "souscription" series of 20 pieces each are today among the most valuable Journe watches.

Founders and family

François-Paul Journe was born in Marseille, France, in 1957. At 14 he was sent to a technical college, and in 1976 he graduated from the watchmaking school in Paris.

Movements and technique

All Journe mechanical watches use movements the company designs and makes itself. Until the end of 2003 these were made of brass; since 2004 the plates and bridges are made of 18k rose gold. Cases and dials come from the company's own suppliers in the canton of Geneva, Les Boîtiers de Genève and Les Cadraniers de Genève. Journe's technical signatures include resonance, constant-force mechanisms and deadbeat seconds.

F.P. Journe today

F.P. Journe is an independent manufacture in central Geneva, with Chanel as minority shareholder since 2018. It makes a small number of watches per year, reported at around 800, and sells through its own boutiques and selected retailers. It belongs to the haute horlogerie and independent segment.

F.P. Journe prices on the pre-owned market

Demand for F.P. Journe watches is strong, and the original souscription pieces have risen sharply in value. Early watches with brass movements (1999–2003) usually fetch more than later gold-movement versions of the same model. Souscription pieces, the Ruthenium series with grey-coated brass movements, boutique editions and "Black Label" platinum pieces are especially sought after. Documented auction results include:

  • Sotheby's, October 2021: a Tourbillon Souverain Souscription (circa 1999) sold for HKD 15.9 million.
  • Only Watch charity auction, 2021: the unique FFC Blue, made with Francis Ford Coppola, sold for CHF 4.5 million.
  • Sotheby's, September 2026: a Tourbillon Souverain made for Sincere Fine Watches' 50th anniversary (circa 2005) sold for HKD 31.4 million.

For regular pieces, condition, full set with box and papers, and service history at the manufacture strongly affect price.

How to recognise a genuine F.P. Journe

High prices make Journe a target for fakes and fraud. A genuine Journe has a gold (from 2004) or brass (1999–2003) movement whose material should fit the production year, with finishing to a very high standard. Check that the serial number on the movement and case match the papers, and buy only from trusted sellers. For an expensive piece, have it checked by the manufacture's service department.
