Gérald Genta: the brand, its history and value

Gérald Genta was one of the most famous watch designers of the 20th century, and from 1969 he also had his own brand. That brand passed to Bulgari in 2000 and was relaunched by LVMH as a standalone label in 2023.

Gérald Genta: origins and founding

Gérald Genta was born in Geneva on 1 May 1931 and trained first in jewelry. He became a freelance watch designer and created some of the best-known watches ever made for other companies, including the Universal Genève Polerouter, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the IWC Ingenieur SL. In 1969 he founded his own watch brand under his name.

It is important to keep two things apart: a Royal Oak or Nautilus is a Genta design, but it is an Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe watch. This page is about watches signed "Gérald Genta" (often written "Gerald Genta") on the dial.

Founders and family

Gérald Genta ran the brand himself for almost three decades. His widow, Evelyne Genta, supported the 2023 relaunch. After selling his brand, Genta founded a new label, Gerald Charles, in 2000. He died on 17 August 2011.

Gérald Genta history and milestones

  • 1969: Gérald Genta founds his own brand.
  • 1980s: licensed Disney character watches, starting with Mickey Mouse in 1984. Mickey's arm shows the minutes with a retrograde hand, and the hour jumps in a window.
  • 1994: the Grande Sonnerie, presented at the time as an extremely complicated wristwatch, and the first Gentissima Oursin, made in very small numbers.
  • 1996: the Singapore retailer The Hour Glass takes a majority stake.
  • 2000: Bulgari buys the brand, together with Daniel Roth. Genta leaves.
  • 2010: Bulgari folds Genta designs into its own range; the Bulgari Octo line has its roots in a Genta design.
  • 2011: LVMH acquires Bulgari.
  • 2020–2021: Bulgari briefly brings the name back with the Arena Bi-Retro and a limited Arena Mickey Mouse edition of 150 pieces.
  • 2023: LVMH announces Gérald Genta as a standalone brand, led by Jean Arnault and produced at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton in Meyrin.

Famous Gérald Genta models

  • Retro watches with Disney characters, especially Mickey Mouse.
  • Arena, often with jumping hour and retrograde minutes or date.
  • Gefica, one of the brand's sports models.
  • Octo, later continued by Bulgari.
  • Gentissima Oursin, the colorful sea-urchin-inspired watch, revived under LVMH.
  • Grande Sonnerie and other high complications made in very small numbers.

Movements and technique

The brand became known for jumping hours and retrograde displays, as well as high complications such as minute repeaters and grande sonneries. Under Bulgari, revived Arena models used Bulgari calibres such as the automatic BVL 300 and BVL262. The newest LVMH-era pieces are developed with La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.

Gérald Genta today

Today Gérald Genta is a very low-volume, high-end brand owned by LVMH. It does not reissue old designs but draws on Genta's large archive of unproduced drawings. New releases include the Gentissima Oursin, a minute repeater (2025) and the Geneva time-only models (2026).

Gérald Genta prices on the pre-owned market

The Disney retrograde watches, especially original Mickey Mouse pieces in gold, are among the most sought-after Genta-signed watches. Arena and Gefica models and complicated pieces also attract interest. Originality is key: unpolished cases, original dials and a working jumping-hour mechanism matter more than cosmetic appeal.

How to recognise a genuine Gérald Genta

Check that the dial signature, caseback engraving and movement belong together, and that a Mickey Mouse or Arena retrograde actually works as it should: a fixed printed character with ordinary hands is a warning sign. Ask for papers and service history, especially on gold pieces. Our guide on how to spot a fake watch explains the general checks.
