Where the Conquest name comes from
Longines registered the name Conquest with the Swiss Federal Intellectual Property Office in 1954, and the brand describes it as the first Longines watch line to have its name protected. The early watches were automatic, with a gold and enamel medallion on the case back: a fish on steel models and a constellation on gold ones. One well-documented early example runs the automatic calibre 19AS (introduced in 1952, 18,000 vibrations per hour, 39-hour power reserve) in a case about 35 mm wide.
Generations of the Conquest
The name has been used for very different watches over seven decades. The main milestones are below.
| Series | Years | References | Case | Movement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Conquest | from 1954 | – | about 35 mm wide (one documented example) | Automatic calibre 19AS (example), fish or constellation medallion on the case back |
| Conquest V.H.P. | 1984 | – | – | High-precision quartz rated to ±10 seconds a year |
| Conquest Heritage 1954-2014 | 2014 (60th anniversary) | – | – | Limited edition: 600 steel and 60 gold pieces, numbered, 1954-style sunburst dial |
| Conquest V.H.P. (revival) | 2017 | three-hand and chronograph | three-hand 41 and 43 mm; chronograph about 42 to 44 mm | Quartz calibres L288.2 and L289.2 (ETA base), ±5 seconds a year |
| Conquest (current) | 2023 redesign; 70th anniversary range 2024 | – | 30, 34, 38 mm; 42 mm chronograph | Automatic L888.5 (72 h) and chronograph L898.5 (59 h) |
Do not mix up the Conquest with the HydroConquest. Longines sells the HydroConquest as a separate dive-style line; this page is about the Conquest itself.
Notable versions and technique
The 2017 Conquest V.H.P. (the name stands for Very High Precision) uses a thermo-compensated quartz movement made exclusively for Longines by ETA. It is rated to within 5 seconds a year, has a date-only perpetual calendar and can reset its hands if a shock or magnetism knocks them out of position. A seconds hand that jumps several seconds at a time signals that the battery is nearly empty.
The current three-hand Conquest uses the self-winding calibre L888.5, based on the ETA A31.L11, with a silicon balance spring and about 72 hours of power reserve. The 42 mm chronograph uses the calibre L898.5, based on the ETA 2892 with a Dubois-Depraz module, with about 59 hours of power reserve. The 2024 range has a screw-down crown and a 316L steel case with 10 bar water resistance on the three-hand models.
What is a Longines Conquest worth?
Value depends on the era more than on the name. A vintage 1950s automatic in steel or gold plate has been described by Worn & Wound as costing roughly $500 to $1,000, depending on condition, while solid gold cases sell for considerably more. Condition of the dial, an original case back with its medallion, a correct buckle or bracelet and a working movement all matter, and 18,000 vph movements like the 19AS are not the easiest to service.
Quartz and recent models are valued like other modern mid-range Swiss watches: the full set with box and papers, the reference and the condition decide the price. We found no documented auction record for a Conquest and do not quote one. Serial numbers and reference numbers let a specialist date a piece, which is the first step to a realistic estimate.
