Luminox: origins and founding

Luminox began in 1989 as an American company. Its founders wanted to use a Swiss self-powered lighting system in watches, so that the dial would glow at night without needing to be charged by light first. The name combines the Latin words lumi (light) and nox (night).

Founders and family

The brand was started by Barry Cohen, a watch industry veteran, together with his friend Richard Timbo. In 1992 they worked with Nick North, an officer of the US Navy SEALs' research and development unit, to create a watch for the SEALs.

Luminox history and milestones

  • 1989: founding in the United States.
  • 1992: the first Navy SEAL watch.
  • 1994: other elite military units and law enforcement agencies start asking for watches.
  • 1998: a license with Lockheed Martin leads to watches named after aircraft such as the F-117 Nighthawk and, later, the SR-71 Blackbird.
  • 2006: the owners of the Swiss watch company Mondaine buy half of Luminox.
  • 2007: the Navy SEAL Colormark 3051 series, which became the best seller.
  • 2010: the Deep Dive Automatic series, certified to the ISO 6425 diving standard.
  • Later: Mondaine takes over the remaining shares, and Luminox becomes part of the Mondaine Group.
  • 2020: partnership with the adventurer Bear Grylls.

Famous Luminox models

  • Navy SEAL: the core line, including the Colormark series and the 3500 series.
  • Lockheed Martin aircraft editions: F-117 Nighthawk and SR-71 Blackbird.
  • RECON Point Man: a military-style field watch.
  • Deep Dive and Pacific Diver: diving watches.
  • Bear Grylls Survival: outdoor watches.

Movements and technique

The key feature is Luminox Light Technology (LLT): small glass tubes filled with tritium gas, set on the hands and hour markers. They glow constantly and, according to the brand's retailers, can last up to 25 years, slowly fading over time. Many Luminox watches use battery-powered quartz movements, while the Deep Dive and some other series have automatic movements.

Luminox today

Luminox is fully owned by the Mondaine Group, which also owns the Mondaine brand. Its watches are made to the Swiss Made rules. It sits in the accessible price segment and focuses on tool watches for military, rescue and outdoor use.

Luminox prices on the pre-owned market

Most Luminox watches are bought to be worn hard, so the resale market is large and prices are modest, usually well below retail. Quartz Navy SEAL models are the most common and sell for the least. Steel models, automatics, limited editions and watches with special unit or agency markings get more interest. Because the tritium tubes fade over the years, the brightness of the lighting affects the value of older pieces. Scratched cases and worn straps are normal and have a smaller effect than on luxury watches.

How to recognise a genuine Luminox

On a genuine Luminox, the lighting comes from small glowing tubes that shine in the dark without being charged by light first. Painted lume that only glows briefly after being in the sun is a warning sign. Check the model number and the Luminox name on the caseback, and buy from authorized sellers when possible.
