Where the Seamaster comes from

Omega introduced the Seamaster in 1948 as a water-resistant watch for everyday wear, meant for town, sea and country. It drew on designs made for the British Royal Navy near the end of World War II. Its key feature was an O-ring gasket, which sealed the case better against changes in temperature and pressure than the lead or shellac gaskets used earlier. In 1957 Omega added the Seamaster 300, a diving watch for professionals, alongside the Speedmaster and Railmaster.

The main Seamaster lines

Today the Seamaster is a family rather than a single watch. The name covers sporty dive watches and dressier everyday watches. Here are the lines owners ask about most:

The Ploprof, launched in 1969 as a 1,200 m deep-diving tool watch, is a separate and rarer branch of the family. Jacques Cousteau wore it on his television series.

Diver 300M, Planet Ocean and Aqua Terra

  • Diver 300M: the Seamaster Professional 300M arrived in 1993 in quartz or automatic versions. The 2018 update grew to 42 mm and 13.5 mm thick, with a ceramic bezel, a laser-engraved wave pattern on the dial and the Master Chronometer calibre 8800, which is METAS-certified and has a 55-hour power reserve.
  • Planet Ocean: launched in 2005 as the successor of the Seamaster 300 (Ref. 165.024) and rated to 600 m. The first version came in 38, 42 and 45.5 mm. In 2019 three experimental Planet Ocean Ultra Deep watches survived a dive of 10,928 m in the Mariana Trench.
  • Aqua Terra: launched in 2002 with a smooth dial, rated to 150 m. The teak-style stripe pattern followed in 2008.

James Bond and the Seamaster

The Seamaster is closely tied to the James Bond films. In GoldenEye (1995) Pierce Brosnan wore the Seamaster Professional Diver 300M Quartz, Ref. 2541.80.00. Because many versions are linked to the films, always check that a watch described as a Bond model really matches the reference.

What is an Omega Seamaster worth?

The range is very wide. A modern steel Diver 300M or Aqua Terra is a different proposition from a 1950s Seamaster or a 1957-era Seamaster 300. Value depends on the line and reference, the movement, whether the dial, hands and bezel are original, condition, and whether box and papers are present. Limited editions and watches with film or sports links can attract extra interest.

Documented auction results show how far the extremes go. A unique 1947 steel Omega "Tourbillon 30 I" prototype sold for $1.4 million at Phillips in Geneva, at the Geneva Watch Auction: SIX in 2021, against an estimate of $100,000 to $200,000. At the other end of the story, the Seamaster Planet Ocean worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale sold for SFr250,250 at Antiquorum's Omegamania sale in Geneva on 14 and 15 April 2007. Neither price says much about an ordinary Seamaster.
