Parmigiani Fleurier: origins and founding
The brand grew out of a restoration workshop. In 1976 Michel Parmigiani opened his own business, Mesure et Art du Temps. He restored antique clocks and watches for collectors and museums. One of his clients was the Sandoz family, whose collection at the watch museum in Le Locle he looked after.
In 1996 the Sandoz Family Foundation bought 51% of his company. With that money the one-man workshop became a full watch brand. Parmigiani Fleurier was presented on May 29, 1996, at the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne, with 52 references. The headquarters is in Fleurier, in the canton of Neuchâtel.
Founders and family
Michel Parmigiani is a trained watchmaker and master restorer. He entered the trade in the mid-1970s and made his name repairing and rebuilding historic pieces. That background still shapes the brand's design language and its interest in traditional finishing. The Sandoz Family Foundation, set up in 1964 by a member of the Sandoz family, is the long-term owner. Pierre Landolt of the foundation launched the brand together with Michel Parmigiani.
Parmigiani Fleurier history and milestones
- 1996: launch; the Toric is the first watch designed by Michel Parmigiani.
- 1999: the Ionica, with the in-house PF110 calibre and an eight-day power reserve. The case maker Bruno Affolter SA is bought and later renamed Les Artisans Boîtiers.
- 2001: the component makers Atokalpa (wheels and pinions) and Elwin (turned parts) join the group.
- 2003: the movement maker Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier becomes a separate company. Hermès later took a minority stake in it.
- 2004: the Bugatti Type 370, with a movement laid out along a single axis so the time can be read from the side, like when driving.
- 2005: the dial maker Quadrance et Habillage is founded.
- 2010: the ultra-thin Tonda 1950 with the first Parmigiani automatic micro-rotor movement.
- 2021: Guido Terreni, formerly at Bulgari, becomes CEO. He cuts the range down and launches the Tonda PF in September 2021.
Famous Parmigiani Fleurier models
- Tonda: round watches and the best-known line. The Tonda PF, with its fine knurled bezel and integrated bracelet, is the current flagship, alongside sportier versions and complications such as rattrapante chronographs.
- Kalpa: the tonneau-shaped (barrel-shaped) line, including the Kalpa Hebdomadaire (the former Ionica), Kalpagraphe chronographs and the smaller Kalpa Piccola, partly with quartz movements.
- Toric: the classic round watch with a knurled bezel, the founder's first design, brought back in 2024.
- Bugatti Type 370 and later Bugatti models: rare, highly complex pieces made with the car maker.
- Pershing: sporty chronographs made with the yacht builder Pershing, no longer sold new.
Movements and technique
Parmigiani Fleurier is one of the few small brands with its own supply chain. The Sandoz group includes a movement maker (Vaucher), a case maker (Les Artisans Boîtiers), a dial maker (Quadrance et Habillage) and component makers (Atokalpa and Elwin). Most mechanical Parmigiani watches therefore use in-house PF calibres, such as the PF110 with eight days of power reserve and the automatic micro-rotor movements in the Tonda line. Some smaller ladies' models use quartz movements.
Parmigiani Fleurier today
The brand is still based in Fleurier and owned by the Sandoz Family Foundation, outside the big watch groups. Production is small, a few thousand watches a year. It belongs to the haute horlogerie segment, with prices well above mid-range Swiss brands, and it has its own boutiques and a selective dealer network.
Parmigiani Fleurier prices on the pre-owned market
Because the brand is not as widely known as the biggest names, many older Parmigiani watches sell used for much less than their original retail price. This is especially true of gold dress watches and quartz models. Demand has grown for the Tonda PF since 2021, particularly the steel and platinum Micro-Rotor and the Tonda PF Sport, which are easier to sell. Complications made in small numbers, such as perpetual calendars, rattrapantes and the Bugatti watches, form a small market of their own and need individual assessment.
What matters most: the exact model and reference, the case metal, condition, and whether you still have the box, papers and service history. Because the movements are in-house, a documented service by Parmigiani is a plus.
How to recognise a genuine Parmigiani Fleurier
Parmigiani watches are made in small numbers and are not faked as often as mass-market brands. Still, check the details. The caseback should carry a reference and an individual number that match the papers. On a display back, the movement should show careful finishing and the PF calibre markings. The knurled bezel on Tonda and Toric models should be crisp and even. Watches that look much cheaper than they should, or come without any documents, are reasons to be careful. Frequently asked questions
Who owns Parmigiani Fleurier?
The Sandoz Family Foundation, which backed Michel Parmigiani when the brand was launched in 1996. It is not part of Swatch Group, Richemont or LVMH.
Does Parmigiani Fleurier make its own movements?
Yes, most mechanical models use in-house PF calibres made with the group's own movement maker, Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. Some small ladies' models are quartz.
Do Parmigiani watches hold their value?
Many older models sell used well below their original price, especially gold dress watches. Recent Tonda PF models are in higher demand, but each watch should be judged by reference, metal and condition.
