Philippe Dufour: origins and founding
Philippe Dufour is not a brand in the usual sense but a single watchmaker who signs his own work. He was born in 1948 and comes from Le Sentier in the Vallée de Joux, a valley with a long tradition of complicated watchmaking. He trained at the watchmaking school of the Vallée de Joux and graduated in 1967.
Founders and family
After school, Dufour joined Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1967 and then worked for several other companies. As an independent, he made five pocket-watch sonnerie movements for Audemars Piguet; the work began in 1982 and the last was delivered in 1988. That experience led to his first wristwatch under his own name.
Philippe Dufour history and milestones
- 1992: Dufour presents his Grande et Petite Sonnerie wristwatch at the Basel fair. It is described as the first wristwatch with this kind of striking mechanism.
- 1996: the Duality, with two balance wheels linked by a differential that averages their rate. Only a very small series was made.
- 2000: the Simplicity, a time-only watch with small seconds, made entirely by hand in small numbers.
- 2020: a 20th-anniversary Simplicity is offered by Dufour himself at Phillips in Geneva.
Famous Philippe Dufour models
- Grande et Petite Sonnerie: a chiming wristwatch made in a handful of pieces.
- Duality: double balance wheels and a differential.
- Simplicity: his best-known watch, in 34 mm and 37 mm cases, in precious metals including white gold and platinum, usually with a guilloché dial.
Movements and technique
Dufour's watches are known for the finishing of their movements, done by hand to a level that many collectors see as a benchmark. The Simplicity movement is a plain hand-wound calibre with small seconds. Its appeal lies in the quality of the work, not in complications.
Philippe Dufour today
Dufour has worked as an independent in the Vallée de Joux for decades. His production has always been tiny, and new orders have reportedly not been taken for years. Prices place his work at the very top of independent watchmaking.
Philippe Dufour prices on the pre-owned market
Dufour watches rarely come up for sale, and when they do it is usually at major auction houses. Documented results show how strong demand is:
- Phillips, New York, 2017: a platinum Duality numbered "00" sold for USD 915,000 including fees.
- Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 2020: a 34 mm platinum Simplicity numbered "100" sold for HKD 5.136 million including fees (about USD 662,000).
- Phillips, Geneva, 2020: the 20th-anniversary Simplicity offered by Dufour sold for USD 1.512 million.
For a Simplicity, the case size (34 mm is seen as rarer), the metal, the dial, the condition and the provenance all matter. Original papers and a known ownership history help a lot.
How to recognise a genuine Philippe Dufour
With so few watches made, each genuine piece can usually be traced. The movement is numbered, and the finishing should be flawless under a loupe. A watch offered privately without documents and history needs an expert check before any money changes hands, ideally by a major auction house or a specialist in independent watchmaking.
