Raymond Weil: origins and founding
Raymond Weil was born in Geneva in 1926. In 1949 he joined the Camy Watch Company, where he worked for 27 years. In 1976, at the age of 50, he started his own brand in Geneva together with Simone Bédat. It was a bold time to begin: cheap quartz watches from Asia were pushing many Swiss firms out of business. Weil aimed at the entry level of the Swiss luxury market and sold internationally from the start.
Founders and family
Olivier Bernheim, Raymond Weil's son-in-law, joined the company in 1982 and became president and CEO in 1996. Simone Bédat and her son left the company that year and founded their own brand, Bedat & Co. Raymond Weil retired in 2002 and died in 2014. Since 2014 his grandson Elie Bernheim has been CEO, the third generation of the family to run the brand.
Raymond Weil history and milestones

- Early 1980s: the Amadeus, named after Mozart, starts the long tradition of music-themed collection names.
- 1986: the ultra-slim Othello for the brand's 10th anniversary.
- Later: collections such as Fidelio, Toccata, Fantasia, Parsifal and Tango.
- 1996: Olivier Bernheim takes over as CEO.

- 2023: the Millesime Small Seconds wins the Challenge Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
Famous Raymond Weil models
- Othello: very thin quartz dress watches from the 1980s, often gold-plated.
- Parsifal: dress and chronograph models in steel, bicolour and gold, popular in the 1990s.
- Tango: sporty quartz watches, many with divers' style bezels.
- Toccata and Tradition: simple, classic everyday watches.
- Freelancer and Maestro: current lines with many automatic models.
- Millesime: a newer, vintage-inspired line.
- Music editions: limited models linked to the Beatles, David Bowie, Buddy Holly and other musicians.
Movements and technique
For most of its history Raymond Weil has used bought-in Swiss movements, quartz for many classic models and mechanical calibres from suppliers such as Sellita for automatics. The brand also makes more complex pieces and introduced its own calibre RW1212. Most vintage Raymond Weil watches you find in drawers are quartz.
Raymond Weil today
Raymond Weil is one of the few Swiss watch brands still owned and run by its founding family, outside the big groups. It is based in Geneva and positions itself as accessible Swiss luxury, below the prices of the large luxury houses.
Raymond Weil prices on the pre-owned market
Raymond Weil watches were made in large numbers, and on the used market most of them sell for a fraction of their original price. Gold-plated quartz models like the Othello usually bring modest sums. For example, at a Fellows auction in the UK in August 2023, a gold-plated Othello sold for £130 and a steel Parsifal chronograph for £403. Solid gold pieces, such as some 18k Parsifal models, are worth more because of the gold content.
What helps: solid gold or steel instead of plating, a complete bracelet, a mechanical movement, good condition and the original box and papers.
How to recognise a genuine Raymond Weil
Genuine watches carry a model reference and a serial number on the caseback. Check that the printing on the dial is crisp and that plated surfaces are not worn through to the base metal, which lowers value but is not a sign of a fake. Raymond Weil is not one of the most faked brands, but copies exist. See our guide on how to spot a fake watch.
