Romain Gauthier: origins and founding
Romain Gauthier founded his company in 2005 in Le Sentier, a watchmaking village in the Vallée de Joux. He started with a business plan rather than a family workshop. In the first year he hired a watchmaker to finish and assemble his first movement, the calibre HM 2206. The first watch, the Prestige HM, was shown at Baselworld in 2007.

Romain Gauthier was born in 1975 in the Vallée de Joux. He trained in precision mechanics, worked for the precision-turning company François Golay and later studied engineering and business. He has no classical watchmaking school background, which shows in his engineering-led approach to movements.

- 2007: Prestige HM, the first watch.
- 2008: investment in CNC machines to make movement parts in-house.
- 2010: Prestige HMS with seconds and a partly open dial.
- 2011: Chanel approaches the company as a component supplier and later takes a minority stake, made public in 2016.
- 2013: Logical One, the constant-force watch that made the brand known.
- 2017: Insight Micro-Rotor, the first automatic.
- 2021: launch of C by Romain Gauthier.

Movements and technique
All watches use movements developed and finished in-house in Le Sentier. The workshop also machines and decorates movement parts for other brands. For Chanel's Monsieur de Chanel calibre it made parts such as wheels, pinions and the balance wheel. In 2016 the team had about 20 people and made around 50 watches a year.
