Where the name Pelagos comes from

Tudor introduced the Pelagos at Baselworld in March 2012 as a titanium dive watch with a 42 mm case, a helium escape valve and 500 meters of water resistance. It came on a titanium bracelet with a spring-loaded dive extension in the clasp, or on a rubber strap. "Pelagos" is Greek for the open sea. Since then the name has grown from a single watch into a family: the original Pelagos, a left-handed version, the FXD, a 39 mm version and the Pelagos Ultra.

The Pelagos generations

The easiest way to tell the lines apart is case size, water resistance and movement. Always check the reference number between the lugs or in the papers, because several lines look similar at first glance.

The first Pelagos used a modified ETA 2824 with a power reserve of about 38 hours. The second generation switched to Tudor's own MT5612, a COSC-certified movement with a silicon hairspring and about 70 hours of power reserve. The date wheel and the white "snowflake" hands link the watch to Tudor's earlier divers.

Notable versions

  • Pelagos LHD (2016): a left-handed version with the crown on the left and beige lume, built on the idea of left-handed military divers made for the French Navy.
  • Pelagos FXD (2021): developed with the combat swimmers of the French Navy, the Commando Hubert, and marked for the Marine Nationale. The titanium case is 42 mm wide and about 12.75 mm thick, with fixed lugs cut from the case block, a bi-directional bezel and a woven fabric strap. Later came a black version with a unidirectional bezel and a chronograph.
  • Pelagos 39 (2022): a smaller titanium case of 39 mm, 11.8 mm thick, without a date and with the MT5400 movement.
  • Pelagos Ultra (2025): 43 mm, 1,000 meters, and a METAS-certified Master Chronometer movement.

What is a Tudor Pelagos worth?

Value depends on the line and reference, condition, whether box, papers and the original bracelet are present, and whether a limited or military-related edition is concerned. Early watches with the ETA-based movement and the later in-house MT5612 watches are different products, so compare like with like. Retail prices at launch give a rough frame: about US$4,400 for the 2012 Pelagos, US$3,900 for the FXD in 2021, US$4,400 for the Pelagos 39 and US$6,100 for the Ultra in 2025.
