Wyler: history, models and value

Wyler is the Swiss brand behind the Incaflex shock-resistant balance, and in Italy it is best known as Wyler Vetta. The name has gone through several owners and revivals, so it helps to know which Wyler you have.

Wyler: origins and founding

Watchmaker Paul Wyler founded the brand in Basel in 1924, together with his brother Alfred. His goal was a robust watch that could survive everyday knocks. In 1927 he patented the Incaflex balance, and he later received further patents on cases, water resistance and automatic winding.

Wyler history and milestones

  • 1927: Patent for the Incaflex system.
  • 1930s: The Milan entrepreneur Binda began selling Wyler watches in Italy, where the brand became known as Vetta and Wyler Vetta.
  • 1956: In a publicity stunt, two Incaflex watches were thrown from the top of the Eiffel Tower and reportedly still worked.
  • 1962: The stunt was repeated from a tower in Seattle for the American market.
  • 1993: The Binda group bought the whole brand and named it Wyler Vetta.
  • 2007: Relaunch as Wyler Genève at Baselworld, with sporty, technical watches.
  • 2009: After the economic crisis, Wyler Genève let go of almost all staff and went bankrupt later that year.
  • 2021: Wyler Vetta restarted as a new company set up by Marcello Binda.

Famous Wyler models

  • Incaflex watches: vintage manual-wind and automatic watches, many with "Incaflex" printed on the dial.
  • Dynawind: a vintage name that today's Wyler Vetta has brought back.
  • Jumbostar: a chronograph first launched in 1968 and reissued by Wyler Vetta with an ETA 2894 automatic movement.
  • Code R (2007): the flagship of the Wyler Genève revival, a tonneau chronograph made in 3,999 pieces.

Movements and technique

The Incaflex is a one-piece balance with two curved, flexible arms. When the watch receives a knock, the arms flex and protect the balance staff, which in the past was a common part to break. The Code R of the 2007 revival used an automatic chronograph derived from the ETA 2894-2.

Wyler today

Since 2021 the name lives on as Wyler Vetta, run as an independent company created by Marcello Binda, separate from the Binda group. It makes steel automatic watches inspired by its 1960s and 1970s designs. The Wyler Genève company of 2007 to 2009 no longer exists.

Wyler prices on the pre-owned market

Most vintage Wyler and Wyler Vetta watches are affordable. Pieces with clean original dials, a working Incaflex movement and a good case sell best, and chronographs and unusual cases attract more interest than simple dress watches. Watches from the short Wyler Genève period, such as the Code R, are rare and have a small following of their own.

How to recognise a genuine Wyler

On a vintage Incaflex watch, open the caseback or ask a watchmaker to do it: the balance should have the typical two curved arms instead of normal spokes. Check that dial, case and movement belong together, and be careful with repainted dials. Our guide explains how to spot a fake watch.
