Zodiac: origins and founding

Ariste Calame opened a watch workshop in Le Locle, in the Swiss Jura, in 1882. At first the business carried his own name. The Zodiac name was already in use when the company registered it as a trademark in 1908.

Founders and family

In 1895 Ariste Calame's son, Louis Ariste Calame, took over the company. In 1928 the company launched a flat pocket watch with the Zodiac calibre 1617.

Zodiac history and milestones

  • 1949: The Autographic, an early automatic sports watch with a power reserve indicator.
  • 1950s: The Sea Wolf dive watch. Zodiac dates it to 1953; research based on period trade journals and adverts points to a launch in 1957 and a public presentation at the Basel fair in 1958.
  • 1960: The Aerospace GMT, with a red GMT hand and a two-colour 24-hour bezel.
  • Late 1960s: The Super Sea Wolf, rated to 750 metres, and the Astrographic with its "floating" hands.
  • 1970: The Olympos.
  • 1990: Willy Gad Monnier, formerly of TAG Heuer, bought the brand.
  • 1997: Montres Zodiac SA went bankrupt in November.
  • 1998: Genender International bought the trademarks and other assets.
  • 2001: Fossil acquired the worldwide rights to the Zodiac name.
  • 2015: The Sea Wolf returned in new versions.

Famous Zodiac models

  • Sea Wolf: one of the first dive watches sold to a wide public, with a rotating dive bezel and large markers.
  • Super Sea Wolf: the heavier, deeper-rated successor, reportedly used by U.S. Navy SEALs in the early 1970s.
  • Aerospace GMT: a Sea Wolf-style watch with a second time zone.
  • Astrographic: a "mystery" dial on which the hands seem to float, driven by transparent discs.
  • Olympos: a more classic version of the floating-hand design in a distinctive "manta ray" case.

Movements and technique

Vintage Zodiacs used both Zodiac's own calibres and bought-in movements, for example A. Schild automatics. The Astrographic used the high-beat Zodiac SST calibre. After Fossil bought the brand, Zodiac watches were still produced in Biel, Switzerland. Since 2015 many modern models use STP movements from STP, a Swiss movement maker in which Fossil bought a majority stake in 2012, such as the STP 1-11, a design based on the ETA 2824, and the STP 3-13.

Zodiac today

Zodiac belongs to Fossil Group, which is based in Richardson, Texas. The brand sat in the affordable to mid-price segment of Swiss mechanical watches. In October 2025 Fossil entered a court-supervised debt restructuring, and in the following months Zodiac sold off its online stock at steep discounts and watches appeared in discount stores. The brand's future was unclear at the time of writing.

Zodiac prices on the pre-owned market

Vintage Zodiacs from the 1950s to the 1970s are the most interesting for collectors, above all early Sea Wolfs, the Super Sea Wolf, the Aerospace GMT and the Astrographic. Original dials, bezels and hands matter a lot, as these parts were often replaced. Modern Zodiacs sell for much less than their original list prices, and the recent discount sales have pushed prices for modern models down further. Vintage Zodiac dress watches and quartz models are usually affordable.

How to recognise a genuine Zodiac

Check the Zodiac name and logo on the dial and caseback, and make sure dial, bezel and hands fit the model and period. On vintage Sea Wolfs, replacement bezel inserts and repainted dials are a common problem, and the earliest dials did not yet carry the Sea Wolf name. If the movement is visible, it should match the model. Our guide explains how to spot a fake watch.
