Hamilton and the pilot's watch
Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and moved its watch manufacturing to Switzerland in 1969. The brand has been part of the Swatch Group since the 1984 merger of SSIH and ASUAG. Its link to flying is old: according to Gear Patrol, Hamilton supplied pilot timepieces for the U.S. airmail flights between Washington, Philadelphia and New York in 1918, and its watches were later used on Admiral Byrd's 1926 North Pole flight. The Khaki Aviation family builds on this heritage. It is a group of pilot's watches with a clear, legible dial, luminous markings and, on several models, tools such as a slide-rule bezel. Khaki is Hamilton's name for its field and military-style collection, and Aviation is the flying branch of it.
The main Khaki Aviation lines
Khaki Aviation is a family, not a single model, so there is no one reference number to look for. Three lines with documented launch dates show how broad it is.
| Series | Years | References | Case | Movement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pilot Pioneer Mechanical | since 2019 | e.g. H76419931 | 36 x 33 mm, 100 m | Hand-wound H-50, 80 hours |
| X-Patrol | 2012 | Auto Chrono | 42 mm, 100 m | Automatic H-21, 60 hours |
| Converter | since 2020 | Time-date, GMT, Auto Chrono | 42 mm (time-date), 44 mm (GMT, chrono), 100 m | H-10 and H-14 (80 hours), H-21 (60 hours) |
The Pilot Pioneer Mechanical is a remake of the Hamilton W10, made from 1973 to 1976. The Converter has three automatic versions, each with a slide-rule bezel for cockpit calculations: a time-and-date model, a GMT and a chronograph. The X-Patrol, launched for Hamilton's 120th anniversary, converts distances, altitudes, volumes and weights with its bezel. Other lines are the X-Wind, whose dial includes a drift-angle calculator for estimating crosswinds, and the Takeoff, Pilot Day Date and Worldtimer chronograph, which appear in the official videos below. Hamilton has also made limited editions, for example with Air Zermatt and with Schott NYC.
Movements and sizes
Sizes depend on the line: from 36 x 33 mm for the Pilot Pioneer Mechanical up to 44 mm for the Converter GMT and chronograph, and 45 mm for the X-Wind. Many models use Hamilton's own H-calibres, which are developed from ETA movements. The H-21 chronograph is described as a heavily upgraded ETA 7750 (Valjoux 7750 base) with a 60-hour power reserve. The H-10 and H-14 have an 80-hour reserve, and the H-50 of the Pilot Pioneer is hand-wound with 80 hours. Because the family covers manual, automatic and some quartz watches, check the caseback and dial text to see which one you own.
What is a Hamilton Khaki Aviation worth?
Khaki Aviation watches are priced as entry-level to mid-range Swiss watches, and the pre-owned market follows that: they are usually bought for use, not as collector's items. Sources we reviewed give no documented auction results for the family, so we do not quote any. What drives value is the line (mechanical chronographs and limited editions such as the Air Zermatt Converter tend to be more interesting than basic time-only watches), condition, the original strap or bracelet, box and papers, and whether the watch has been serviced. A model that Hamilton still sells new will always compete with the current retail price.
