Hamilton: origins and founding
The Hamilton Watch Company was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. It took over the factory of the bankrupt Keystone Standard Watch Company; several earlier watch companies had used the same buildings. The company was named after Andrew Hamilton, who founded Lancaster. Hamilton started out making high-precision pocket watches.
Hamilton history and milestones
- Late 1800s and early 1900s: Hamilton becomes known for railroad-grade pocket watches, marketed as "The Watch of Railroad Accuracy". The 992 and 950 grades are among the best-known.
- World War II: Civilian production stops. Hamilton supplies wristwatches and marine chronometers to the US military, more than one million watches in total.
- 1957: The Hamilton Electric 500, presented as the world's first electric (battery-powered) watch. Its asymmetrical Ventura case was designed by Richard Arbib, and Elvis Presley wore one.
- 1969: The Lancaster factory closes and production moves to Switzerland, to Hamilton's Büren factory. That same year Büren is part of the group that launches the Chrono-Matic Calibre 11, one of the first automatic chronograph movements, together with Heuer and Breitling.
- 1970s: Hamilton develops the Pulsar, the first electronic digital watch. In the early 1970s the brand is sold to the Swiss group SSIH.
- 1984: SSIH merges with ASUAG, the group later renamed the Swatch Group.
- 2010s–2020s: Hamilton watches appear in many films, including Interstellar (2014), Tenet (2020) and Oppenheimer (2023).
Famous Hamilton models
- Railroad pocket watches: Grades such as the 992 and 950, often found in inherited collections.
- Ventura: The triangular-shaped watch from 1957, still made today in quartz and automatic versions.
- Khaki Field: Military-style field watches, including the hand-wound Khaki Field Mechanical inspired by Vietnam-era US issue watches.
- Khaki Aviation and Khaki Navy: Pilot's and diver's watches.
- Jazzmaster: Dress and everyday watches.
- Intra-Matic and Chrono-Matic: Modern models styled on Hamilton designs of the 1960s and 1970s.
- Military issue watches: WWII and later US government issue pieces.
Movements and technique
Early Hamiltons used the company's own American-made movements. Today Hamilton uses movements from ETA, its Swatch Group sister company, often modified exclusively for Hamilton. The H-10 automatic, used in many current models, is based on the ETA C07.611 and offers about 80 hours of power reserve. The hand-wound H-50 in the Khaki Field Mechanical is a modified ETA 2801-2, also with about 80 hours.
Hamilton today
Hamilton is a Swatch Group brand based in Biel/Bienne and makes its watches in Switzerland, while presenting itself with its American heritage. It sits in the affordable to mid-price segment.
Hamilton prices on the pre-owned market
Most modern Hamiltons are produced in large numbers and sell for clearly less than their new price. Limited editions, such as the film-related models, can hold value better. Box, papers and good condition help.
Collectors are most interested in vintage pieces: railroad-grade pocket watches, original Electric 500 and Ventura watches, Chrono-Matic chronographs, and documented military issue watches. Original dials, matching movements and cases, and working condition matter a great deal. For pocket watches, the grade, jewel count, case metal and condition of the enamel dial are key. Gold-filled cases are much more common than solid gold.
How to recognise a genuine Hamilton
On vintage Hamilton pocket watches, the grade and serial number are engraved on the movement, and the serial helps date the watch. Check that the movement fits the case and dial; many old pocket watches have been recased. Early electric watches are often found with replaced parts, so a specialist should check them. Military watches are a target for fakes and redials, so check caseback markings carefully. On modern Hamiltons, the reference number on the caseback should match the papers. Our guide on how to spot a fake watch covers the general checks.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hamilton a Swiss or American brand?
Both, in a sense. Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but production moved to Switzerland in 1969. Today it is owned by the Swatch Group and based in Biel/Bienne.
How do I date a Hamilton pocket watch?
Look for the serial number engraved on the movement, not the case. Hamilton serial number tables show the approximate year of production.
Are old Hamilton watches valuable?
It depends on the model and condition. Railroad-grade pocket watches, original Electric 500 and Ventura watches and documented military pieces are the most sought after; ordinary gold-filled pocket watches are usually of moderate value.
