Where the Ventura comes from

The Ventura was designed by the American industrial designer Richard Arbib, who also designed cars and appliances. Hamilton describes the brief as a free hand: design whatever you want, without worrying about practicality. The result was a shield-shaped, asymmetrical steel case with the crown set into the unusual shape. It appeared in 1957 on the Hamilton Electric, which Hamilton launched as the first watch powered by a battery instead of a mainspring. It cost $200 at the time.

From electric icon to modern collection

The original Ventura stayed in production for about seven years and was then retired. The electric movement it carried, calibre 500 from 1957 and the more robust calibre 505 from 1959, was delicate, and battery-powered watches were soon overtaken by quartz. Hamilton brought the Ventura back in 1988 and has made it ever since.

Today the line includes several sizes and movements. The Ventura Quartz comes in sizes such as 32 x 50 mm and 24 x 36 mm, while the automatic Ventura Elvis80 is about 42.5 x 44.6 mm. In 2015 Hamilton launched the Elvis80 collection for what would have been Elvis Presley's 80th birthday, and in 2017 it released editions marking 60 years since Arbib's original sketch. The Elvis80 automatic uses the Hamilton H-10 movement with an 80-hour power reserve.

Elvis Presley and the movies

Elvis Presley wore a Ventura in the 1961 film Blue Hawaii, as product placement, and later wore the watch off screen. In 1965 he bought a second Ventura, a white gold model with a black dial. It was sold at Guernsey's in October 1999, and Hamilton bought it back. It is now in Hamilton's museum collection. The Ventura also became a film watch in the Men in Black series: Hamilton's own videos present it as the official watch of the Men in Black.

What is a Hamilton Ventura worth?

Value depends mostly on which kind of Ventura you have. For vintage electric watches, collectors look for an original, unconverted movement (calibre 500 or 505), a solid gold case, the original dial and working contacts. Watches that were secretly converted to quartz, have replacement dials or hands, a worn gold-filled case or a corroded, non-running movement are worth less. Servicing an electric Ventura needs a specialist.

Modern Venturas, including quartz models and the Elvis80 editions, are current Hamilton watches, so condition, the box and papers and the exact edition matter most. Prices for vintage pieces vary widely, and we do not know of a documented auction result for a Ventura other than Elvis's own watch, whose individual price is not published in the sources we checked.

Frequently asked questions

When was the Hamilton Ventura introduced?

The Ventura was designed by Richard Arbib and appeared in 1957 on the Hamilton Electric, Hamilton's first battery-powered watch.

Did Elvis Presley wear a Hamilton Ventura?

Yes. He wore one in the 1961 film Blue Hawaii and later bought a white gold Ventura with a black dial in 1965. Hamilton bought that watch back after the 1999 Guernsey's auction.

How big is a Hamilton Ventura?

It depends on the model. The Ventura Quartz comes in sizes such as 32 x 50 mm and 24 x 36 mm, and the automatic Elvis80 measures about 42.5 x 44.6 mm.

What movement does a Ventura have?

The original used a battery-powered electric movement (calibre 500, later 505). Today there are quartz versions and automatic ones, such as the Elvis80 with the H-10 movement.

What makes a vintage Ventura valuable?

An original unconverted electric movement, a solid gold case, the original dial and working contacts. Hidden quartz conversions and replacement parts lower the value.
